Nature excels at producing materials that can be hard and soft at the same time. Hair and fingernails are a good example, both consisting of the protein called keratin.
Industrial designer Lilian van Daal was fascinated by the idea of heterogeneous materials and set out to make a comfy chair built with one material only. This is in stark contrast with classical chair that have different materials like foam, wood and metal, usually glued or nailed together.
The piece of furniture she came up with was made possible by 3D-printing technology. It has all the properties of a soft chair and is made out of one piece of the same material. Fittingly, she named the chair ‘Biomimicry’.
